A Year to Come Together

SPRING Newsletter, 2021

This past year did not fit into anyone’s strategic plan, business model, or projections. It was a year to survive, come together, and stand strong in the face of much uncertainty. We have so much to be grateful for, and the community support we received is at the top of our list.

FINISH STRONG

Summer Newsletter, 2020

These past months have been exhausting and emotional, on a global scale, but particularly for organizations like ours that are intimately connected to those who are extraordinarily vulnerable. The fight has been arduous. We have celebrated small successes, only to be faced with new challenges. We have found new sources of funding, only to realize it is not enough. But, we refuse to fail.

HELLO WORLD

SPRING Newsletter, 2020

Our Growing Family Stands Together To Survive Pandemic And Sustain Hope.

In the midst of crisis, Step By Step remains undaunted, continually adapting to change in order to meet the emergent needs of those most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the needs escalate, our faithful family of donors and volunteers continue to step up to help. And, every healthy baby born delivers hope, gives us a reason to celebrate, and reminds us to not give up. We continue to do what we have always done, and we know that we will get through this - together, one step at a time.

GERMAINE KORUM CENTER PRE-GRAND OPENING

Winter Newsletter, 2019

On October 26th, Step By Step celebrated a pre-grand opening celebration to ensure that Germaine Korum and her family, founding donors for the project, could attend.

The site is named after Germaine, who has battled lung cancer for years and is well known in the local community for her advocacy for women and children. The Korum family gave a $500,000 financial gift early on in the project, which was matched to help us purchase the property. The focus for this center will be on teaching soft skills and providing job-training and workforce experience. This place will allow us the time and flexibility to offer intentional, individualized, holistic care, based on the unique needs and challenges of the women we serve. Wraparound services offered onsite will include case management, life skills and parenting classes, mentorship, and mental health counseling.

LOOK UP

Spring Newsletter, 2019

My name is Rachel. And, I'm proud to say that I am a Step By Step mom. When I found out I was pregnant with Beverlyann, my mother’s namesake, I was so happy. But, then the despair kicked in. How could I do this without my mother? When two close friends saw the sadness in my eyes, they reached in their hearts and got me some much needed help. From that moment, my life was changed.

FAMILY IS EVERYTHING

WINTER Newsletter, 2018

Over the first weekend of December, we celebrated Christmas with 1,936 Step By Step moms and members of their families! We have found this night to be one that children look forward to all year; a safe place for moms and dads to find refuge for a few hours; a place where hugs, smiles, and kindness abound; a place where souls get loved on with nothing expected in return.

Usually, we share the heartwarming stories we experience during this magical weekend, and there were many!! But, Sunday night’s party was bittersweet.

EVERY STEP LEADS TOWARDS MOMENTS & MILESTONES

Summer Newsletter, 2018

I first met with Kareena at a library, in Seattle. At the time, she was eighteen years old, pregnant, and homeless. She was feeling overwhelmed, unsure of her future, and unprepared to become a mom. She was determined to keep her baby, but she needed help. After over 21 years working as a Behavioral Health Specialist and a case manager with Step By Step, I have grown used to seeing and experiencing the huge barriers to hope and health that many of the women we work with are facing.

As I sat in that library and listened to Kareena tell me about her story, it was easy to see her many strengths and huge potential.

LIVING DREAMS OUT LOUD

Spring Newsletter, 2018

I recently watched a professional basketball coach being interviewed by a reporter. The reporter was asking why he allowed one of his star players to attend the birth of his child instead of playing in their semi-final tournament. The coach said, “I allowed Augusto to miss the tournament and attend the birth of his child, because that’s the height of the human experience. When you see your first child, you will understand what one of the most important things in life is, because nothing can be more majestic in the world than the birth of a child.”

For so many, this is how the birth of a child is seen, the height of the human experience. But, for many others, the news of a pregnancy is seen as quite the opposite.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, April 2019:

A LEGACY IN MOTION

My dream for this future center goes beyond just teaching basic employment skills. I want to build strong families. We are committed to helping the women we serve to not only become skilled, reliable, and successful professionals, but also to realize their value as mothers, to recognize their unique strengths, and to see hope for their future. We are going to help them dream, and then we are going to help them put those dreams to work.
